Eguisheim is the village that looks exactly like a fairy tale. Everywhere you look is picture-perfect! We chose this town specifically to take our wine-loving guests for the day because of its unique circular design and the sheer number of wineries—over 20 producers are represented here.
The way they incorporate flowers and nature is what makes Eguisheim something special compared to the other towns. The quaintness and robust flowers covering all the buildings as you walk through the winding streets are breathtaking
We knew Eguisheim gets absolutely slammed with tourists, so we left early to get there before the crowds. Our plan was to visit two wineries before they closed for lunch at 12 PM, explore the town, have lunch, and then visit two more after they reopened at 2 PM.
We walked up the main street and then did the full circle all the way around the town—it’s built as a double ring, so we walked the outer and inner paths to see all the homes, winery tasting rooms, shops, and eateries.
This is the place to be if you want to sample a lot of wine! Most wineries here are €1 per taste, and often, if you spend a minimum on a bottle of wine, the tasting fee is waived.
A Wine Pro-Tip: The tasting menus are usually set up to showcase the producer's work, starting with the classic or traditional wines at the top and working your way down to the Grand Cru and special selections.
We had an unexpectedly good light lunch at L'Asseitte D'Eguisheim. One of our guests picked it, and while the others were skeptical about having Alsatian food, everyone ended up loving it! We shared escargot, duck foie gras, and an onion tart with salad. The onion tart was the favorite!.
We also stumbled upon a shop we will never forget: the Champignon store (mushroom)! It had everything mushroom—magnets, dried mushrooms, tapenades, figurines, and so much more. We also all bought amazing coconut macaroon cookies from the Maison Alsacienne De Biscuiterie. They were handing out free samples of macaroons right out of the oven, and then none of us could resist!
After our four wine stops, we went back to Colmar with our guests. We first visited Domaine Karcher et Fils, to experience the different style of wine tasting between Colmar and Eguisheim. The tasting at Domaine Karcher et Fils was $25 per person and you have to buy a minimum of 6 wines for the tasting to be free. I purchased a bottle of their Grand Cru Schlossburg Riesling for us to drink later that night.
We then spent a couple of hours walking around to get great shots at all the famous photo spots in Colmar. We finished our time together with a final glass of wine and charcuterie at a wine shop before they headed off to Switzerland!
We loved Eguisheim's beauty and the fact that you can walk from one winery to the next, which is great for a wine-hopping day! The perfect circle of the town and the flowers make it stand out. The only downside? The crowds when we left were crazy! You definitely need to arrive early, and keep an eye out for the tour train that circles through the town.
